Halloween Meringue Bones: Easy Spooky Meringue Cookies

White homemade meringue bones arranged on a tray, a simple spooky sweet treat for Halloween.

Looking for a simple Halloween treat that is both spooky and sweet? These Halloween meringue bones are a fun idea for a Halloween party, a themed dessert table or a spooky night at home.
Made with just three ingredients, they turn classic meringues into little edible bones.

Meringues are a familiar and relatively simple sweet, so this is less about discovering a new recipe and more about finding a creative way to present them. Their crisp white shape makes them perfect for Halloween, and you can use the same technique to create meringue ghosts and skulls, too.

The secret is to let the meringues dry slowly in a very low oven. They will become firm enough to handle after a couple of hours, but they may need additional time to dry completely.

Halloween Meringue Bones Recipe

Yield: 8 servings
Prep time: 15 minutes
Resting time: Several hours or overnight, if needed
Cooking time: At least 2 hours

Ingredients

  • 90 g egg whites
  • 180 g icing sugar
  • A pinch of salt

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 80°C (175°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Place the egg whites and a pinch of salt in a clean, grease-free mixing bowl. Whisk with an electric mixer until the whites become foamy.
  3. Add the icing sugar a little at a time, whisking continuously. Make sure each addition is incorporated before adding more. Continue whisking until the meringue is glossy, thick and holds stiff peaks. This should take around 10–15 minutes in total, depending on your mixer.
  4. Transfer the meringue to a piping bag and snip off a small opening at the tip.
  5. Pipe bone shapes onto the prepared baking tray. Make each bone by piping a short, narrow line and adding rounded lobes at both ends.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for at least 2 hours, until the meringues are dry enough on the outside to lift carefully from the parchment paper.
  7. If the meringues are still soft inside, leave them in the oven for several more hours, or let them continue drying at room temperature for a day or two, protected with a loose sheet of parchment paper.
  8. Once completely dry, serve your meringue bones at your Halloween party.

Notes

  • Use a template if you need one. If piping bones freehand feels tricky, print a bone shape and place it under the parchment paper as a guide. Trace the outline with a pencil, then turn the paper over so the pencil marks do not touch the meringue.
  • Make more Halloween shapes. Use the same technique to pipe ghosts or skulls. Once the meringues are dry, add small chocolate drops for eyes and mouths.
  • Drying takes time. Meringues need a low oven and patience. The exact time depends on their size and how dry you want them to be.
  • Keep them dry. Store completely dried meringues in an airtight container, away from humidity, to help preserve their crisp texture.

These Halloween meringue bones are an easy way to add a spooky homemade touch to your Halloween dessert table. Arrange them on a dark platter, scatter them around other Halloween treats, or serve them in a bowl as edible bones for your party guests!
